Cindy’s Top Fitness Tips; Part 2

     1.      Be Strong. There are going to be enablers around you 24 /7, trying to wreck your healthy eating habits and your workouts. You’ll hear, “Just take a bite, it won’t hurt you.” YES, IT WILL. “Skip a workout and let’s go grab dinner.” But that dinner will still be there AFTER A WORKOUT! Holiday times are the worst. Misery loves company and if everyone is eating bad foods and feeling guilty they want you to do the same. You need to refrain and have self-control to make the right choices during these times.

    2.      Set realistic goals. You did not put the weight on overnight, so don’t expect it to come off overnight. Slow and steady wins the race. Make small goals every week and work hard to achieve them.

    3.      Journal. There are many online nutrition journals where you can log your food daily or simply get a notebook and keep a daily log. There are even apps on smart phones for your convenience now. I think you make better choices when you write down everything you eat and drink. I feel most people don’t realize how quickly the calories add up. This helps you become more aware of what you are putting into your mouth.

    4.      Get moving! You must have a good exercise program that will keep your heart rate elevated for the duration of your workout. My workout consists of 30 to 45 minutes a day, 6 to 7 times a week of cardio and exercise that consist of using my own body weight of up to 5 lb. dumbbells. With having rheumatoid arthritis, the cardio helps keep my joints nice and loose through the day and the light weight exercise keep my bones strong and help in building muscle tone.

    5.      Attitude! If you don’t have this one down, you will not reach any goal that you set for yourself. Your attitude will MAKE OR BREAK YOU! A positive attitude will take you further than you can imagine.

Cindy’s Top Fitness Tips; Part 1

     1.      Decide to make a lifestyle change. Do not look for a quick fix, when becoming healthier, it needs to be a slow progression that is implemented into your daily routine for long term results.

     2.      Find something or someone to be accountable to. If you’re having trouble reaching your fitness goals, and cannot seem to find the motivation to get back on track, then you need to find a program that gives you the reason to eat better and get moving. This accountability can come from a gym membership, a personal trainer, or a group fitness program such as an outdoor boot camp.

     3.      Start reading labels. First you need to learn all you can about the right nutrition, there is abundant amount of information online and in magazines. Learn how many calories you need to consume and start reading labels. Check the ingredients list and serving sizes. Portion control is everything!

     4.      Buy a scale. This is my biggest weight loss tool! Most people who battle their weight find stepping onto a scale frightening, but the scale is your FRIEND! I tell my clients to weigh first thing every morning. It is the tool to keep you on track. When you have had too much sodium in your diet, your weight will fluctuate a few pounds. Too much sodium is a culprit and can sabotage your weight loss goals by making you retain fluid.

     5.      Change Your Mental Attitude. When you start giving your body a make-over by incorporating a change in diet and exercise, you also must change your mind set. People with weight issues must change their perception of food. You must think of FOOD AS FUEL, only eat to feed the body the nutrients and vitamins it needs. I struggled with my weight for many years because of my addiction to food, therefore I had to change my way of thinking.

8 Tips for Youthful Glowing Skin

8 Tips for Youthful Glowing Skin

Skin aging is the result of many external factors. However, there are ways to prevent the degenerative process. Here are some factors that speed up the skin aging process and here is some helpful tips to combat skin aging.
  1. Stress-Stress is a known cause of aging. Stress causes pressure and tension on your body also causing cells regeneration to slow or stop. Stress can leave your face tense causing wrinkles. In situations of high stress the body can produce more of the hormone cortisol which can damage collagen and elastin and decrease the skin's ability to repair itself. In order to prevent stress from increasing the aging process  exercise regularly and find an outlet of relaxation such as yoga, painting, and crafting. Whatever your stress reliever, apply that hobby to your daily or weekly routine to reduce stress.
  2. Sweets-Too many sweets are unhealthy for your body and can cause the breakdown of the fibers that support your skin. In order to prevent sweets from aging your skin curb your consumption of candy, cookies, doughnuts, or other simple carbohydrates such as white bread and rice. If you must indulge your sweet tooth having a small piece of dark chocolate is best for your body. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants which can protect you from free radicals.
  3. Frequent Flying-Frequent flying is known to cause health risks and dry skin. This is due to being closer to the sun and intense high altitudes. Therefore, if you must fly lather your skin in a sunscreen moisturizer or your favorite sunscreen. This will protect your face from solar rays and help your skin retain it's natural moisture.
  4. Sleep-Lack of sleep puts your body into stress mode which causes your body to release stress hormones. In order to prevent skin aging due to lack of sleep allow yourself to get a full REM cycle while you sleep. Anywhere between 6-7 hours of sleep is sufficient.
  5. Depression-Depression can be caused by many life related issues such as work, relationships, financial burdens etc. However, people cannot always change their situations rapidly. Therefore the number one way to have more confidence is through exercise. Exercise releases endorphins in the brain preventing negative mood signals to be transmitted. Talking to a medical professional is also helpful in more severe situations.
  6. Over Exercising- Regular exercise is healthy and reduced stress. But over exercising has been found to be unhealthy and can wreak havoc on your body. Over exercising can cause joint damage and loss of skin support structure. Therefore, a balanced exercise routine and skin protection can keep the body young and healthy.
  7. Weight Change- Weight fluctuation can take its toll on the skin's elasticity. Aim to keep a healthy normal body mass index ranging from 18.5 to 24.9. Your local gym or personal trainer can help with an assessment of your BMI to insure your within a healthy range.
  8. Moisture Loss-As we get older our bodies begin to produce less estrogen causing less oil and collagen production in the skin. The best ways to prevent this natural collagen loss is by using heavy moisturizer or consulting a doctor regarding hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

We’re living longer but are we investing wiser?

The Fat to Fit Radio Show...

We’re living longer but are we investing wiser?

Thanks to better access to health care, medical advances and healthier lifestyles, living beyond 90 is likelier than ever. The number of Americans living to age 90 and beyond has tripled in the past three decades to about 1.8 million people and is like to quadruple by 2050, according to the Census Bureau. Our expectations for retirement age need to be revised to reflect increasing life expectancies. Most people don’t have the money for a 20-year or 30-year retirement. They have not saved enough in their 401(k)s, IRAs and savings accounts to create meaningful retirement income. Many people may find that retirement does not live up to their expectations. Some will go back to work; some will retire on less and settle for less.

Here are 5 tips to finance for a long life:
  1. Take a look at your future needs. Sit down with a financial advisor to determine whether your current savings is sufficient for your future lifestyle. Many times people retire too early because they underestimate their savings.
  2. Consider downsizing. This is a good time to think about lifestyle changes. Ask yourself if can you live comfortably in a smaller home? If you and your spouse have stopped working, can you live with one vehicle instead of two? This is a good time to think about what you can live without.
  3. Understand your retirement accounts. It is important that you understand the tax implications of your retirement funds so you know what to expect when you retire and begin to withdraw your money.
  4. Look into longevity insurance. There are annuity options available that don’t begin making payments until the age of 85. If you knew there would be a stream of income kicking in when you turn 85, you could spend your other assets by that time and not worry about outliving your money.
  5. Live a more frugal lifestyle. Cut down on expenses, clip coupons, and take advantage of discounts. Becoming a member of AARP provides a number of discounts on entertainment, dining, and other purchases. Once you have more free time, use it to save yourself money.

Ultimately, what many of us don't want to hear but is true is finding a career that you love will be the best investment you can make for your financial future. Doing what you love and loving what you do is essential to maximizing your savings for retirement.

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

As Promised by the Fat to Fit Radio Show...

10 Reasons You're Not Losing Weight

1. "Healthy Foods"
Every major chain restaurant has adopted a "healthy foods menu" it has confused the average person trying to change his or her eating habits for the better. It's easy to think that choosing a salad over a steak is the better option. However, when that salad is loaded with cheese, croutons, bacon, and heavy dressing, it can rival any high calorie food on the menu. When choosing a salad option, choose to hold the dressing on the side and be sure that you don't request all the trimmings that can easily take your low calorie food into high calorie, high fat territory.

2. Skipping Meals
If you skip too many meals, over time your body begins to hold on to every calorie you consume. In short, your body begins to hoard and store the calories you put in because it is convinced that you may be going into starvation mode otherwise. Eat more small meals throughout the day. Instead of one or two large meals, eat five or six small meals that consist mainly of fruits, veggies, and protein.

3. Being Cold
If you're anemic you can't help being a bit chilly most of the time. But, when you are chronically cold, you run the risk of wanting foods that are warm, soothing and hearty to help warm you. However, most of those hearty foods are also high in calories. This is an easy fix. First, find the real reason for your constant cold condition. If you're anemic, see if you need to supplement your iron intake. If that's not the case, then layer up. Carry a sweater and make sure you dress for the weather. If you live in a colder climate, add a workout to your normal routine and eat more calories in the form of a high protein snack.

4. Not Getting Enough Sleep

When you don't establish a regular sleeping pattern, your body is sent into a hormone wreck. Your leptin levels, which reduce appetite, are lowered and your ghrelin levels, which increase appetite, are raised. The result? Your lack of sleep contributes to overeating and indulging, when all you really need is more sleep. Go to bed 30 to 45 minutes before you normally would and continue building more sleep into your nightly routine.

5. Eating Too Fast
Eating too fast is a major culprit in over-eating. Once you begin eating, you need at least 15 to 20 minutes to begin to process food and feel somewhat full. Scarfing down a meal in under six minutes may have been a great thing for frat guys to brag about in college, but it has no place in the food habits of the healthy.Take time to savor your food and slow down. Be sure to enjoy a meal away from the computer or television to ensure you reasonably pace yourself.

6. Munching In Front Of A Screen
Regardless if it's a computer or television screen, when you are distracted by what's being shown it's easy to lose track of how much you are eating. Sit at the dinner table and allot a decent amount of time (usually 30 minutes will do) for your meal.

7. Using Large Plates
Using large plates are a recipe for disaster on your diet. The problem with large plates is that most people feel the urge to fill those plates with food. Larger plates means larger portions and larger portions mean more calories and more chances to over-eat. Use a medium to small size plate for all your meals. You'll consume less calories and your eyes won't notice the difference

8. Scale Back

When you weigh yourself daily or worse, several times a day, you create an environment where you are constantly in turmoil over every fluctuation you see. While it is helpful to maintain your weight with some monitoring, constant monitoring is more harmful than helpful. Set a day and time to weigh yourself and stick to it. Know that your weight will change throughout the day so weighing yourself at the same time weekly, will give you more accurate and comparable results.

9. Stress
Some people respond to stress by eating less and others respond by eating more. Either way, stress is a surefire derail to your healthy habits. Cortisol is raised when you're stressed and that can lead your blood pressure and sugar levels to become out-of-whack. Once that happens, the chances of over-eating increase. Indulge in things that help you relax. Reading, listening to soothing music and yoga are excellent ways to de-stress after a long day.

10. Your Friends
When you hang out with people, do you tend to eat more? Do you eat different types of foods? Monitor your eating habits when your environment changes and notice if you're the type of person who's eating habits change dramatically with the company that you keep. Don't turn into a recluse in order to keep to your diet. Do choose your foods wisely and, when possible, bring your own food to
dinner parties—share your healthy and delicious dishes.

Never give up on your weight loss journey! Stay dedicated, motivated, and follow these tips to help you along the way!

TIPS TO GET BACK ON TRACK AFTER THANKSGIVING

As promised on the Fat To Fit Radio Show.....

TIPS TO GET BACK ON TRACK AFTER THANKSGIVING

"Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it."  ~Lou Holtz

YOU CAN DO IT!
If you're like me you most likely woke up to having to deal with the post Thanksgiving "damage control"- not fun! Getting back on track with your fitness and weight loss goals after a festive holiday of overeating with family and friends can be overwhelming for some people. If you ate too much on Thanksgiving don’t worry you can regroup and get back to exercising daily and eating clean!

Typically at social gatherings there are plenty of high calorie foods and desserts to tempt and tantalize your taste buds. Often self discipline and control seem to go out the window the moment you step through the door. If you overindulged don’t despair there is nothing wrong with indulging a bit by eating succulent foods; in fact, it’s good for the body and mind to have a high calorie meal now and again after weeks of eating clean.

Unfortunately, many people have negative attitudes towards themselves in the aftermath of overeating and convince themselves that they have already ruined their diet. The negative mind set can cause them to think to themselves “Why should I continue try to lose weight or get in shape? I already gained weight back....” then they fall right back to mindlessly eating junk food and sweets, and lack the desire to continue to exercise which ultimately causes more weight gain and frustrations.

If you are discouraged here are 6 simple ways to get back on track to assist you in reaching your fitness goals.

6 Fitness Tips To Get Back on Track!

1. Get back to the gym! It’s easy to let the day after Thanksgiving be a day of rest after waking up feeling the after effects of having way too many calories. Your body needs you to workout today more than ever to get it back on track and burn off some of the calories from Thanksgiving. Commit to exercising for at least a week to help release the water weight you may have gained, it takes a few days for the body to balance itself again after eating a large high calorie meal and desserts.

2. Drink up! After eating a huge meal filled with carbs, fats, sugars, and sodium your body will have a lot of toxins to get rid of. Drink a gallon (or more) of purified water to flush out your system. A great detox drink to have first thing in the morning is 8 oz of warm water with 1 tsp of lemon juice, 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar, a pinch of cayenne pepper, and cinnamon mixed with 1 tsp raw honey. This will aid detoxing your organs and digestive track.

3. Eat a low-carb diet. When you eat a lot of high carb foods your insulin increases turning your food into glucose and then storing the energy as fat. It also limits the body's ability to release stored energy otherwise known as fat. So to turn your body into a fat burning machine try to keep your carb intake to 50 grams a day. Stay away from gluten and dairy products as well because they cause water weight retention and inflammation which will sabotage your efforts. Have your carbs in the morning and eat protein and fresh veggies for the rest of the day.

4. Write down your goals with a smile on your face. Write down goals that you will do this next week. Always write in the present tense as though you have already accomplished them, i.e. “I weigh ____.” “I love to workout!” “I crave healthy whole foods each day.” Believing in yourself that you can will help you reach your goals and follow through!

5. Visualize fitness success.
Each morning and night focus and visualize exactly how you want to be, use all five senses. Post a photo for a visual aid of how you desire your physique to be. Have gratitude in your heart and give thanks aloud throughout the day for your miraculous body and for all the blessings in your life.

6. Plan ahead & be prepared! If you fail to plan you're basically planning to fail. Write down your meals and workout plans for the week, and follow through! Keep a gratitude, meal workout journal. Keeping accountability for yourself is highly motivating. Keeping a gratitude journal will literally transform your thoughts to create the life and body of your dreams!

If you do the above faithfully you will overcome the dreaded post Thanksgiving "hang-over" and it will help take care of the "damage" easily. Make exercise a high priority in your life to get your body, mind, and spirit back on track.  Believe in all that you are and have fun as you continue to strive to live a healthier and happier way of life.

7 Tips to Avoid Overeating on Thanksgiving

As promised on Fat To Fit Radio last week...

7 Tips to Avoid Overeating on Thanksgiving

1) Take Home Leftovers: Bring your own Tupperware. If you overeat because you enjoy good food there is no shame in coming equipped with your own doggie bag. No need to eat mindlessly if you know that you can savor it again later.

2) Sit Down: Many of us take a plate of food and nibble on it until you've found a seat or are ready to sit down. It’s hard to really enjoy food when you are standing up, balancing a plate. Don’t take a bite unless you are sitting down.

3) Name Three of Your Favorite Thanksgiving Foods: It’s likely that you named foods you only get once a year like cranberry dressing, sweet potato pie, or turkey. Consider what it is about these foods that gives you pleasure.  The texture?  Taste?  Smell?  Focus on the foods you really love. Savor. Consider whether you really enjoy filler foods like rolls, things you can get all year.  Stick to what you know you love.

4) Take a Game or Photos: When food is the only event at Thanksgiving, it makes it too easy to mindlessly over eat. Bring your favorite board game, cards, or even bring along photos from the years to ooh and ahh over.

5) Find Ways to Soothe and Comfort Yourself. Holidays are exciting and stressful at the same time. Find ways to calm and soothe yourself so you don’t turn to calories for comfort.

6) Rethink Thanksgiving: Perhaps we need to change our perception of the holiday before we can change our behavior. In many ways, Thanksgiving is just like any other meal. Allowing yourself to think Thanksgiving is  "different" or "special" seems to imply that there is a different way we eat. Yes, it is a holiday. However, mindful eating is not a diet. You don’t have to avoid good food. It just means eating it slowly, with full awareness.

7) Mindless Triggers: It’s likely that you know your most common mindless eating triggers. Do you tend to pick mindlessly at food when it is sitting directly in front of you? Does eating next to an annoying relative lead you to stress eat? Make a list of things that sabotage your mindful eating and strategize around how to address them. For example, pick your favorite person to sit next to and grab the seat. If you tend to pick at food, commit to passing food out of arm’s reach as soon as you sit down.

15 Ways to Get Your Kids to Eat Better
A nutritionist who's also the mother of 7-year-old triplets gives tried-and-true tips for getting your child to eat vegetables, drink milk, try new foods, and more.By Julie Burns, R.D. from Parents Magazine
  1. Make a schedule. Children need to eat every three to four hours: three meals, two snacks, and lots of fluids. If you plan for these, your child's diet will be much more balanced and he'll be less cranky, because he won't be famished. I put a cooler in the car when I'm out with my kids and keep it stocked with carrots, pretzels, yogurt, and water so we don't have to rely on fast food.
  2. Plan dinners. If thinking about a weekly menu is too daunting, start with two or three days at a time. A good dinner doesn't have to be fancy, but it should be balanced: whole-grain bread, rice, or pasta; a fruit or a vegetable; and a protein source like lean meat, cheese, or beans. I often make simple entree soups or Mexican chili ahead of time and then freeze it; at dinnertime, I heat it up and add whole-grain bread and a bowl of cut-up apples or melon to round out the meal.
  3. Don't become a short-order cook. A few years ago, I got into a bad habit. I'd make two suppers -- one that I knew the kids would like and one for my husband and me. It was exhausting. Now I prepare one meal for everybody and serve it family-style so the kids can pick and choose what they want. Children often mimic their parents' behavior, so one of these days, they'll eat most of the food I serve them.
  4. Bite your tongue. As hard as this may be, try not to comment on what or how much your kids are eating. Be as neutral as possible. Remember, you've done your job as a parent by serving balanced meals; your kids are responsible for eating them. If you play food enforcer -- saying things like "Eat your vegetables" -- your child will only resist.
  5. Introduce new foods slowly. Children are new-food-phobic by nature. I tell my kids that their taste buds sometimes have to get used to a flavor before they'll like the taste. A little hero worship can work wonders too. Marty refused to even try peas until I told him that Michael Jordan eats his to stay big and strong. Now Marty eats peas all the time.
  6. Dip it. If your kids won't eat vegetables, experiment with dips. Kathleen tried her first vegetable when I served her a thinly cut carrot with some ranch salad dressing. My children also like hummus, salsa, and yogurt-based dressing.
  7. Make mornings count. Most families don't eat enough fiber on a daily basis, and breakfast is an easy place to sneak it in. Look for high-fiber cereals for a quick fix. Or, do what I do and make up batches of whole-grain pancake and waffle batter that last all week. For a batch that serves five, sift together 2 cups whole-wheat pastry flour, 4 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 2 Tbs. sugar. When you're ready to cook, mix in 2 Tbs. ground flax meal, 2 cups water, 3 Tbs. canola oil, 1/4 tsp. vanilla, and 2 Tbs. applesauce.
  8. Sneak in soy. Even if your kids don't have milk allergies, soy milk is a terrific source of healthy phytochemicals. My kids don't like soy milk but don't notice when it's hidden in a recipe. I use the low-fat, calcium-fortified kind in some recipes that call for milk, such as oatmeal, mashed potatoes, and sauces.
  9. Sprinkle some sugar. Julia eats her cooked carrots with a bit of brown sugar, and I mix a little root beer into her prune juice to make prune-juice soda. Kathleen and Marty like a sprinkle of sugar on their fruit. I know that they'll eventually outgrow this need for extra sweetness, but in the meantime, they're eating fruits and vegetables.
  10. Get kids cooking. If your children become involved in choosing or preparing meals, they'll be more interested in eating what they've created. Take them to the store, and let them choose produce for you. If they're old enough, allow them to cut up vegetables and mix them into a salad. Although Julia refuses to eat fresh fruit, she and I make banana or apple muffins together -- and she always eats them once they're done.
  11. Cut back on junk. Remember, you -- not your kids -- are in charge of the foods that enter the house. By having fewer junk foods around, you'll force your children to eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products.
  12. Allow treats. Having less healthy foods occasionally keeps them from becoming forbidden -- and thus even more appealing. We call candy, soda, and cookies "sometimes" foods. I generally buy only healthy cereals such as Cheerios and Raisin Bran, but I let my kids have sugary cereals when they visit their grandparents or when we're on vacation. And I treat them to McDonald's for lunch every so often.
  13. Have fun. The more creative the meal is, the greater the variety of foods my kids eat. We make smiley-face pancakes and give foods silly names. (Broccoli florets are "baby trees" or "dinosaur food.") Anything mini is always a hit too. I often use cookie cutters to turn toast into hearts and stars, which the children love.
  14. Be a role model. If you're constantly on a diet or have erratic eating habits, your children will grow up thinking that this sort of behavior is normal. Be honest with yourself about the kinds of food messages you're sending. Trust your body to tell you when you're hungry and when you're full, and your kids will learn to do the same.
  15. Adjust your attitude. Realize that what your kids eat over time is what matters. Having popcorn at the movies or eating an ice-cream sundae are some of life's real pleasures. As long as you balance these times with smart food choices and physical activity, your children will be fine.

I started running in 2011 as a way to maintain my weight loss from a size 16 to a size 8 . I signed up for my first half marathon the Rock ‘n’ Roll New Orleans Marathon in which I completed in February 2011. I find keeping the weight off is just as challenging as losing the weight to begin with but by changing it up, setting new goals and rewarding yourself keeps yourself motivated. Last October as I was turning 40 I decided after 10 Half Marathons it was time to start training for my first Full. I asked for my families support and I went after it. On 2-2-14 I crossed the finish line feeling EXHILARATED! I accomplished something I never thought possible. Since I started my journey I have completed 1- Full Marathon,10- Half's, 3-10miler, 5- 10k's, 25- 5k's, 1-mudrace, 3 trail runs (2-5ks & 1 Half Marathon), 1 sprint Triathalon,1 sprint Duathlon, & 3 Paddleboard races. Experiences & friendships made= Priceless!! I want to keep going and encourage others to do the same. I am a wife, mother and I work full time so balance is key but I want to show others that it can be done.
