Zinc- Depression And Anxiety

Sorry I’m a little late this week on my video, I have been battling the Omicron sub-variant BA.5 and let me tell you it zapped me for a few days. Today I’m feeling back to my old self. I have enjoyed a few days indulging in books I have been wanting to read and bingeing on Netflix. Let me tell you, I highly suggest reading the historical fiction novel called The Lincoln Highway, so good!

Ok, let’s get to it!

Today we are discussing Zinc.

Zinc is easily one of the most important nutrients for Mental Health! Low zinc status can contribute to symptoms of anxiety, depression, brain fog, insomnia, and so much more. ⁣⁣

Zinc is necessary for healthy immune function in the brain, methylation, Neuroplasticity, and NMDA receptor activity. ⁣

Through these mechanisms, zinc can have an antidepressant-like and antianxiety effect. ⁣⁣

On my blood chemistry analysis test, I assess several key makers to thoroughly assess zinc status, including:⁣

Plasma Zinc⁣

Urine KPU⁣

Homocysteine ⁣

Bilirubin⁣

Alkaline Phosphatase⁣

I look at these lab results every day and see low zinc status in the VAST majority of individuals coming to me with Mental Health struggles such as depression and anxiety. ⁣

A low dose of supplemental zinc is generally well-tolerated (about 10-15 mg), but the dose should really be bio-individualized based on lab results. ⁣⁣

Do you take supplemental zinc? How has it helped you? What are some of your favorite zinc-containing foods? Let me know in the comments below!⁣
