Uric Acid

Today we are talking about Uric Acid. Uric acid is a lab panel not often run by medical practitioners unless someone is suspected of gout. As your practitioner, I feel it’s a biomarker that is imperative to run. This lab test can provide great insight into your health when someone is educated on how to interpret the result.

High Uric Acid is often associated with increased oxidative stress, tissue breakdown, gut dysbiosis, and Selenium deficiency. The conventional reference range is typically 3.7 - 8.6. The test is rarely ran and if it is, no one typically pays attention to it unless it is marked by the lab as being high or you have already been diagnosed with gout.

But, the optimal range I have seen so far may be closer to 3.7 - 6.0. As you see Uric acid creeping over 6.0, we need to consider why. Remember, Gout is the result not the cause! It’s time to figure out the underlying cause.

When I see patients with a rise of Uric Acid, these are some common reasons:-The person may have gut dysbiosis-This patient is likely to have a Selenium deficiency. -They are likely to have systemic inflammation and Insulin resistance.

So what can we do if Uric Acid is elevated?
-Definitely consider a deeper look of the GI Tract.
-Make sure you are eating Selenium rich foods
-Work with a functional medicine practitioner to guide you as to the best support strategy.
